Larger shrub 7'h x 5'w   Flowers: January/February   Flower Color: Pink   Likes: Full Sun

Brings the form and characteristics of a large manzanita tree in a compact form much more suited to smaller gardens and landscapes. This shrub grows to a height and spread of 6 to 8 foot, with an upright form and evergreen foliage. Attractive purple bark provides year-round beauty, supplemented by pink flowers in the spring. This manzanita has gray-green foliage that contrasts beautifully with the deep purple bark. This adaptable specimen plant is known to be garden tolerant, able to grow in heavy clay soils or serpentinite, and also tolerant of loam or even decomposed granite. Adorned with pink flowers in spring, it's a delight to the hummingbirds and a fabulous addition to any landscape.  Tolerates a wide variety of soils, but is fairly intolerant of summer water or added fertilizer.  (Calscape)

Larger shrub 6'h x 8'w   Flowers: January/February   Flower Color: Pink   Likes: Full Sun

A selection of A. densiflora.  Similar in size and look to "Ian Bush".  Early bloomer, January and February, in the valley.  Popular, easy to grow Manzanita.  Slightly larger that "Sentinel".  Profuse flowers in late winter.  Can take some additional water.  Can be pruned to a small tree.

Arctostaphylos manzanita  Common Name: Dr. Hurd Manzanita

Family: Ericaceae

Type: Shrub, 10'h x 8'w

Flowers: January to February

Flower Color: White

Large manzanita. Evergreen.  Light green foliage.  Can take some garden irrigation. Very attractive red bark - prune lower branches to desired height and shape.  Can grow very tall - 15 ft but slow growing in our garden - 6' after 8 years with no supplemental water.  Appears to be very adaptable and easy to grow although can be susceptible to fungal diseases.  Does not like overhead water.  Hybrid in cultivation since the 1980s.
