Found throughout much of California below 4000'.  Very drought resistant. Yelloow flowers Spring into Summer.  Yellow flowers turn to red.  Part of the Legume Family - fixes nitrogen. Prune in late Summer or early Fall.  Can be summer dicideous.

Milkweed family. Widely distributed in the Western US.  Perennial small shrub that is popular with birds.  Monarch butterflies use during migration as a nectar source.  Fragrant blossoms and long blooming period.  Likes full sun.

Variable species.  Purple color although may vary.  Smaller shrub that likes full sun.  Nice summer color and with some moisture long bloom period.  Prune annually to desired shape.  (Symphyotrichum chilense)

Normally light purple with yellow centers.  This one likes wet places and some shade - not a good companion to other sun loving Asters.  Good landscape plant easily incorporated into a non-native garden.  aka Symphyotrichum spathulatum

Easy to grow and adapatable to any condition.  Aka "Parking Strip Plant" because of its adaptability, nice green color while even under adverse conditions.  Fire resistant and deer do not like it.  Grows from coastal to Sierra foothill.

Very drought tolerant, perennial shrub. After flowering, fruits have long feathery plumes until seeds drop. Popular as part of a drought tolerant landscape.  Over water will cause this to burnout.  Desert plant.  Avoid summer irrigation after established.
